As part of the NCI/NIH funded grant 'Radionuclide Resource for Cancer
Applications' awarded to Washington University School of Medicine, we are
committed to organizing workshops to help educate the community about the use
and safe-handling of positron-emitting nuclides.
A one-day satellite workshop was organized under the auspices of this grant
by members of the Division of Radiological Sciences to coincide with the 17th
International Symposium on Radiopharmaceutical Sciences held in Aachen,
Germany, April 30th - May 4th 2007.
The workshop, Production and Application of "Non-Standard" PET Nuclides, was
held on Sunday 29th April, 2007 at the Eurogress Aachen and was organized by
Jason Lewis, PhD, Lucie Tang, and Michael Welch, PhD. The workshop was designed
for the radiopharmaceutical community discussing the production, use and
dissemination of the "non-standard" PET nuclides. The definition of "non-standard"
PET nuclides included 45Ti, 60Cu, 61Cu,
64Cu, 66Ga, 72As, 74As,
76Br, 86Y, 89Zr, 94mTc and
124I.
The workshop was attended by over 110 scientists and engineers from over 20
countries from all over the world and was designed with an open forum style to
allow for discussions and interactions by all participants.
Schedule
A special edition of the Quarterly Journal of Nuclear Medicine is currently in
production and contains chapters devoted to the subjects discussed during the
workshop. With the addition of a commentary by the RRCA team, this meeting
report is slated to be published late in 2007. The workshop was so successful
the organizers have already been requested to plan another workshop at the 18th
International Symposium on Radiopharmaceutical Sciences to be held in Edmonton,
Canada in 2009.
In June 2007, we also had our usual complimentary booth in the Exhibit Hall at
the SNM Annual Meeting in Washington DC. This display was used to facilitate
meetings between collaborators and service projects, as well as to increase
interest in the nuclides produced under the grant.
